Taking place in 1962, the gifted pianist Dr. Don Shirley (Ali Mahershalai – 2018 Golden Globes winner for Best Supporting Actor) goes on a concert tour ranging from New York to the South. His driver is the Italian-American Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a simple man from the working class, who earns his living with odd jobs and as a bouncer. The contrast between the two could not be greater. However, they develop a close friendship as they journey together through a period that is beset by violence and segregation but characterized with humor and true humanity. In planning their trip, they rely on the Negro Motorist Green Book, a travel guide for African American motorists which lists the few accommodations and restaurants that serve black guests.
This is a film about two different men who together go through ups and downs in developing a true friendship, one that is wonderfully funny and at the same time deeply moving. Director Peter Farrelly paints an authentic picture of an impressive tour in troubled times, a tragicomedy based on true events.
